THE DESIGN PYLON

Power:1 x 400kV

Height:31 metres / 100 feet

Installed: 84 pylons

Material:Hot-dip galvanised steel shaft - stainless steel lattice head

Installation: easily installed monopile foundation

Energised:2006

Origin:1st prize in international competition

Due to fierce public opposition to lattice towers, it was decided in 2001 that new design pylons should be used for future overhead lines. The BYSTRUP Design Pylon was awarded 1st prize in an international competition organised by Energinet.dk in 2001. At present, about 80 of these pylons have been erected in Denmark.

The overall strategy for the Design Pylon is to reduce visual intrusion in the landscape. The pylon is reduced to a few simple elements quietly crossing the landscape. Several options for surface treatment were examined and the final choice was hot-dip galvanised steel for the shaft and stainless steel for the lattice top. The lattice head is built of stainless steel tubes joined by cast nodes: a simple, cost-efficient and quick assembly method.

The power line is designed as line of mono-pile structures with stainless steel filigree heads that  blend into the sky – “magically” - only the shafts remain noticeable.

"The locals were involved in the entire process and embraced their new pylons, calling them Magic Wands"

- Henning Øbro, Senior Executive Project Manager, Energinet.dk.

The Design Pylon has proven its remarkable benefits by being successfully installed and energized for the last ten years on a 27km line in Denmark. The Pylon in Denmark is designed for 1x400kV but it is feasible for 330 kV and 132 kV in even smaller versions according to the relevant loads and specifications.

The tower head is constructed as a lattice structure of stainless steel tubes welded together. The joints of the tubes are cast in stainless steel. Developing the moulds for the castings and execution of the casting were difficult tasks due to the complicated geometry. A prototype of the suspension tower was constructed and tested mechanically to 105% of the maximum design loads.
